high-frequency infrared carbon & sulfur analyzer is designed and manufactured based on the selective infrared (IR) absorption of CO2 and SO2.
Infrared (IR) rays are electromagnetic waves with a wavelength ranging from 0.78μm to 1000μm. It can be divided into three regions with 0.78~2.5μm as the near infrared region, 2.5~25μm as the mid-infrared region and 25~100μm as the far-infrared region. Most IR instruments work in the mid-infrared region. Infrared rays are called infrared light as well because the characteristics are generally the same with the visible light that will travel in a straight line and comply with the law of light reflection and transmission. However, the infrared light is different with visible light from three distinctive features. Firstly, the infrared thermal power turns out to be largest throughout the electromagnetic spectrum; Secondly, the infrared rays will penetrate thick gas or cloud cover without scattering; finally, the thermal effects are significantly changed and easy to control after the infrared rays are absorbed.
Many substances such as CO2 and SO2 can selectively absorb the infrared rays. The maximum absorption wavelength for CO2 is 4.26μm whereas for SO2, it is 7.35μm. Both the infrared absorption of CO2 and SO2 obey the Lambert Beer's law. Therefore, the basic principle of infrared analysis is the same with photometric analysis, but different with sensors and measured components. The sensor is phototube for photometric analysis whereas infrared detector for infrared analysis. The measured component is colored solution for photometric analysis whereas gas for infrared analysis. Therefore, the infrared analysis can be named as "gas colorimetric analysis" as well.
The infrared detector is sophisticated gas analysis equipment, which consists of infrared (IR) light source, modulator, filter, measuring cell, detector together with relative circuits.
Before the combustion of samples, there is only O2 going through the measuring cell. As the infrared light with specified wavelength will not be absorbed by O2, detectors will receive the infrared light with maximum energy emitted from the infrared light source. Then, with the combustion of samples, CO2 and SO2 will enter the measuring cell together with O2 to absorb the infrared light. The infrared light energy received by detectors will decay exponentially with the concentration increase of CO2 and SO2. The percentage of carbon and sulfur contents in samples will be acquired after data process from computer with the energy detectors received when the standard sample going through the measuring cell as reference
